Choosing the Correct Head Unit Size for Your Car
If you are looking to upgrade your car stereo system, there are several different components to consider. You need to equip your car with high-quality speakers, a booming subwoofer, an amazing amplifier, and perhaps most importantly, a new stereo head unit.
The head unit can completely transform your driving experience, especially if you opt for an Apple CarPlay aftermarket head unit that allows you to safely use popular smartphone apps while driving. However, when choosing a new stereo it is important to know the correct head unit size and choose a head unit that will fit perfectly in your car. Luckily, the car stereo experts at Audio Shack in El Cajon have put together this guide to help you find the correct head unit size for your car. Are All Head Units the Same Size?
All head units are not the same size. Generally, head units come in one of two DIN sizes, known as single DIN head units and double DIN head units.
**Some cars also support 1.5 DIN head units, which measures 3 inches by 7 inches.**
Single DIN Size
A single DIN size head unit is the standard stereo head unit size, generally measuring 2 inches tall and seven inches wide. However, the depth of the stereo can vary, so make sure you are aware of the head unit depth your car dashboard can comfortably hold.
Double DIN Size
Double DIN size is exactly what it sounds like, doubling the size of a single DIN unit. It is twice as tall, generally measuring 4 inches tall, and has the same width (seven inches wide). A double DIN head unit allows you to have a larger dashboard screen, making it easy to see the oversized display.
Are Head Units Universal?
Most head units are not universal. You need to make sure your chosen head unit snugly fits into your car's dashboard. That is why it is so important to only trust car stereo specialists and experts to choose the perfect head unit for your specific needs.
There are a few universal head units that will fit most car stereo dashboards, but it is essential to exercise caution and to make sure your car can safely and securely fit the head unit before agreeing to make a purchase.
Use an Online Database to Find the Right Head Unit Size
The key to finding the right head unit size for your car is to find a car stereo online database. Here you can plug in your car’s make, year, and model, and the database will let you know whether your car supports single DIN head units, double DIN, or some other size. Once you know the size head unit your car can support, you are ready to make a purchase decision.
Measure the Head Unit Size Yourself
If for some reason you cannot find an online database or your car is not listed in the database, you can always measure the head unit yourself with a tape measure or ruler. This is not typically advised, as it requires you to safely remove your existing head unit and to possibly remove some existing trim. In general, the best way to choose the correct head unit size is to find a car stereo specialist who can steer you in the right direction.
